Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd has announced that its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Datuk Mohd Muazzam Mohamed, has tendered his resignation after ten years with the group, including seven years leading the organisation.
In a statement, the bank said that his resignation will take effect on January 7, 2026, with his last working day on December 12, 2025. The Board of Directors has already begun a formal search process to identify a suitable successor who will guide Bank Islam through its next phase of growth.
According to the bank, a new GCEO will be announced once regulatory approvals have been obtained. During the interim period, Mizan Masram, the Group Chief Business Officer for Retail Banking, will assume the role of Officer-in-Charge starting from December 13, 2025. Mohd Muazzam will remain with the group during the transition period to support Mizan and ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities.
Throughout his tenure, Mohd Muazzam made significant contributions to Bank Islam’s transformation journey, particularly in advancing the bank’s digitalisation efforts and integrating technology with Islamic finance principles. He led the bank’s digital transformation strategy, introducing several key initiatives such as e-payment services and the launch of Be U, Malaysia’s first cloud-native mobile banking application.
In October 2021, he also oversaw a major group restructuring, which saw Bank Islam assume the listing status from its parent company. This move positioned Bank Islam as the only standalone Islamic bank listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia, strengthening its identity and presence in the financial sector.
Under his leadership, the group demonstrated remarkable financial growth and resilience. Bank Islam’s total asset size grew from RM64 billion in 2018 to RM100 billion in 2025, reflecting steady performance and strategic execution.
Bank Islam chairman Tan Sri Dr. Ismail Haji Bakar expressed his appreciation for Mohd Muazzam’s contributions, noting that he has been instrumental in shaping Bank Islam into a strong and resilient institution. He added that Mohd Muazzam is stepping down to pursue personal interests after a decade of dedicated service.
