Islamic Development Bank Backs Pakistan with $603 Million in Development Projects

Pakistan has signed three financing agreements worth $603.4 million with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to support key infrastructure and social development initiatives. The agreements were signed in Islamabad between Dr. Rami Ahmad, IsDB Vice President for Operations, and senior Pakistani government officials, in the presence of key ministers and representatives.

Under the financing package, $118.4 million has been allocated to the Poverty Graduation Project, which aims to benefit approximately 68,500 households by creating employment opportunities and strengthening human capital development. The initiative is designed to support vulnerable communities and promote long-term economic resilience.

A further $475 million will be invested in the M6 Motorway Project, covering a 120.8-kilometre section of the Peshawar–Karachi Motorway. This project will help bridge a critical gap in Pakistan’s north–south transport corridor, improving connectivity, trade, and regional integration.

In addition, $10 million will support the Out-of-School Children in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K) Project, which aims to provide non-formal education to around 60,000 children. The project includes upgrading 135 schools, establishing 250 learning centres, training 4,000 teachers, and constructing climate-resilient educational facilities to improve education access in remote and underserved areas.

Dr. Rami Ahmad arrived in Islamabad on January 18 for a four-day official visit focused on strengthening strategic cooperation between Pakistan and the Islamic Development Bank. The visit includes discussions with Pakistani leadership on advancing IsDB-financed projects and aligning development priorities.

The agreements support Pakistan’s broader development vision under the “Uraan Pakistan” plan, following the completion of the 2023–2025 Country Engagement Framework. Officials noted that the financing will contribute to sustainable development, infrastructure growth, education access, and social welfare programs across the country.
