Vodacom Tanzania Launches $28 Million M-Pesa Fintech 2.0 Platform

On April 2, 2026, Tanzania’s largest mobile network operator, Vodacom Tanzania, launched its $28 million M-Pesa Fintech 2.0 platform to meet the growing demand for digital financial services.

The new platform represents a major upgrade, designed to support higher transaction volumes and improve system stability. According to the company, it can process more than 1,000 transactions per second—equivalent to approximately 86 million transactions per day—while targeting 99.999% availability, which translates to less than five minutes of downtime annually. The system also allows maintenance and updates to be carried out without interrupting services.

In addition, the platform integrates advanced technologies such as AI-based monitoring, auto-scaling, and automatic failover to ensure continuous operations even during system faults. These features aim to enhance reliability and provide a seamless experience for users.

For agents, merchants, and enterprise clients, the platform offers increased transaction capacity along with improved reporting tools to support reconciliation and service management. It also enables faster deployment of new services across payments, savings, credit, and enterprise solutions.

Following the launch, Vodacom has introduced a 30-day “Hyper Care” period to closely monitor system performance and address any operational issues.

Speaking at the launch event held at the company’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam, CEO Philip Besiimire said the investment is aimed at future-proofing one of Tanzania’s most important financial platforms. He emphasized that the upgrade strengthens the foundation of M-Pesa, ensuring it remains secure, reliable, and capable of supporting innovation at scale.
