New Bloomberg Shariah Sukuk Indices Address Benchmark Needs in Rapidly Expanding Global Islamic Debt Markets

Bloomberg Indices has launched the Bloomberg Shariah Sukuk Indices, a new suite of benchmarks designed to track the performance of the global sukuk market. The indices provide transparent, rules-based fixed income benchmarks that align with Shariah principles while meeting institutional standards for governance and methodology.

The launch comes as the global sukuk market surpassed US$1 trillion in outstanding debt as of year-end 2025, according to Bloomberg data. The market’s rapid expansion has increased the need for more sophisticated benchmarking and risk analysis tools to support investors participating in Islamic fixed income markets.

Bloomberg’s Sukuk and Shariah Sukuk indices offer coverage across multiple currencies and market segments, including multi-currency and US dollar-denominated sukuk, as well as Investment Grade and High Yield categories. They also provide regional segmentation, covering areas such as Emerging Markets and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), allowing investors to better manage geographic exposure within Shariah-compliant portfolios.

Nick Gendron, Global Head of Fixed Income Index Product Management at Bloomberg Index Services Limited, said the continued development of global sukuk markets is driving demand for transparent, institutional-grade benchmarks that support Shariah-compliant investing. He noted that the new indices combine a robust, rules-based framework with strong governance standards, enabling investors to construct and benchmark Shariah-compliant fixed income portfolios with confidence.

The Bloomberg Shariah Sukuk Indices were developed using Bloomberg’s established fixed income index framework, with Shariah compliance assessments conducted by IdealRatings. The screening methodology is based on standards set by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI), helping to ensure consistency and standardisation across Islamic fixed income products.
