SITR Compliance Technology Launches Bahrain Operations with Shariah Compliance Platform

SITR Compliance Technology, an emerging Bahraini regulatory technology (RegTech) startup supported by the Bahrain Economic Development Board, has officially launched its operations in Bahrain. The announcement was made on November 3, 2026, at Gateway Gulf 2026, an investment forum hosted by the board in Manama. The company has established its headquarters in Manama and plans to provide its technology solutions to financial institutions across Bahrain and the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. As part of its expansion strategy, SITR also intends to recruit Bahraini professionals in business development, operations, and product development.

SITR Compliance Technology specializes in developing Shariah compliance infrastructure for Islamic financial institutions. Its platform is designed to continuously monitor executed financial transactions against the rulings and guidelines established by an institution’s Shariah Supervisory Board. The solution targets a broad range of financial institutions, including Islamic banks operating in retail, commercial, and wholesale banking, as well as investment funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), brokerage firms, and consumer finance providers. Its technology supports the monitoring of various Islamic financial products and contracts, including Murabaha, Tawarruq, Ijarah, Musharaka, Mudaraba, Wakala, and Sukuk.

The SITR platform connects with core banking systems through read-only integrations that operate independently of the transaction execution process. This approach enables financial institutions to monitor compliance without interfering with their existing banking operations. The platform can also process contracts and supporting documentation in formats already used by financial institutions, including scanned PDF documents. This functionality is intended to facilitate adoption while minimizing operational disruption.

Traditionally, internal Shariah audit functions have relied on periodic reviews and sample-based transaction assessments. SITR aims to enhance this process by providing compliance and audit teams with continuous visibility into the entire transaction population. The platform is designed to identify potential Shariah compliance issues, including incorrect transaction execution sequences, documentation deficiencies, and changes to core banking parameters. By identifying these issues at an earlier stage, the technology aims to help financial institutions address potential compliance risks before they result in Shariah non-compliant income or purification obligations.

The platform is developed in alignment with the Central Bank of Bahrain’s Shariah Governance requirements and the standards issued by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI). It is intended to strengthen internal Shariah audit capabilities while complementing the role of independent external Shariah auditors.

Commenting on the launch, Yousuf Tyabji, Founder and CEO of SITR Compliance Technology, highlighted the importance of strengthening Shariah compliance processes as the Islamic finance industry continues to expand globally. He stated, “Islamic finance has grown into a global industry, yet much of the work of verifying Shariah compliance still happens after the fact and on a sample basis.”

Through its technology-driven approach, SITR seeks to support Islamic financial institutions in improving transaction monitoring, strengthening governance frameworks, and enhancing the effectiveness of Shariah compliance and audit functions. The launch of SITR’s Bahrain operations represents another development in the application of regulatory technology to Islamic finance, particularly in the areas of Shariah governance, compliance monitoring, and financial institution oversight.
