Wadaag Bank Launches Digital-First Islamic Banking Services in Somaliland

Wadaag Bank, the sixth licensed commercial bank in Somaliland, has officially commenced commercial operations, marking a significant step in the development of the territory’s Islamic banking sector. Licensed by the Central Bank of Somaliland, the bank is positioned as a digital-first, fully Shariah-compliant financial institution committed to enhancing financial inclusion through technology-driven banking solutions.

The bank was officially inaugurated on 31 August 2025 at the Sarovar Premiere Hotel in Hargeisa, in the presence of the President of Somaliland and other senior government officials. Following the completion of its operational preparations, Wadaag Bank has now begun offering banking services to customers across the region.

A key feature of Wadaag Bank is its public ownership model, which allows individuals to become shareholders by purchasing shares priced at US$1,100 each across different investment categories. This approach is designed to encourage broader community participation and support the bank’s long-term growth.

To serve a market where mobile payments are widely used, Wadaag Bank has integrated its digital banking platform with Somaliland’s leading mobile money services, including Zaad and eDahab. This interoperability enables customers to conduct banking transactions conveniently through their mobile devices while promoting seamless digital financial services.

Despite operating in a territory that lacks international recognition, creating challenges such as limited access to correspondent banking and global financial networks, Wadaag Bank aims to overcome these barriers by providing innovative, Shariah-compliant banking solutions tailored to the needs of individuals and businesses.

Commenting on the bank’s vision, Chief Executive Officer Abdirahman Muse highlighted Wadaag Bank’s commitment to delivering modern Islamic banking through digital channels while ensuring full compliance with Shariah principles. He also emphasized the bank’s focus on expanding financial access and supporting Somaliland’s economic development through technology and ethical finance.

The launch of Wadaag Bank reflects the growing momentum of Islamic finance and digital banking innovation in emerging markets, demonstrating how technology can help expand access to inclusive and Shariah-compliant financial services even in challenging operating environments.
